Why is one ranked by NIRF?

The Minister of Human Resource Development introduced the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) on September 29, 2015, following its approval by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. This framework provides a national ranking approach for institutions.

The thirteen groups that comprise the higher education establishments are as follows: universities, colleges, research institutions, medical, engineering, management, law, pharmacy, dentistry, agricultural and related industries, and innovation.

Three new categories—Open Universities, Skill Universities, and State-funded government universities—were added to the NIRF Ranking for 2024. According to AICTE Chair Anil Sahasrabudhe, the NIRF rankings would incorporate Sustainability Rankings starting in the next year.
